HOW WILL THE PROJECT HELP THE VALLEY?

This project will help the community and UCM researchers learn more about the factors that help or hurt our health and well-being in the Valley.

WHAT IS THIS STUDY ABOUT?

We are interested in how psychosocial, social, and behavioral factors shape our health and well-being in the Central Valley. Please look at the Study Details Section for more information.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

We do not expect physical, economic, or legal risks to the participants through a survey study. Potential psychological/social risks to the participant are very minimal. Some survey items may be perceived as sensitive, particularly those about everyday experiences of discrimination or your health habits.

WHAT DO I RECEIVE AS COMPENSATION (PAYMENT)?

As a participant, you will receive an email with a gift card to either Amazon.com or Wal-Mart. For each of the 4 parts you complete you will receive $5. Participants completing all parts will receive a $5 bonus, for $25 total.

You will receive an email link to the gift card at the end of the survey.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Your privacy is extremely important to us. We plan to keep your personal information confidential. Only the Health in the Valley team will have access to anything that might identify you, and the data will be kept electronically in password-protected computers at UC Merced. The data will not be given to any other group and will be used for the study purposes only. You can email us at healthinthevalley@ucmerced.eduif you have questions or concerns about the privacy of your personal information.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INFORMATION AFTER THE STUDY?

Once the information has been collected, we plan to analyze the data to get a better understanding about the health of our community. We aim to share our findings with the community. We also may follow up with participants to see if they would like to be involved in future sub-studies related to Health in the Valley. Of course, at any point of the study, you can opt-out of these sub-studies.

If you are interested in hearing more, we’ll put you on a mailing list for more information. Findings from this study will also be written up in scientific papers.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT ANSWER SOME OF THE SURVEY QUESTIONS OR I QUIT THE STUDY?

You can choose to skip survey questions or quit the study at any time. There will be no penalty to you or your standing in the community if you should choose to skip survey questions or quit the study. You will still be compensated for your time with the $5 gift card.
